The original objective of 1337NET was to pull together a set of machines to create our own reproducible network defense scenarios. Alongside all the infrastructure which was developed with this goal in mind, creating vulnerable containers club members can break into or practice defending is achievable now more than ever.

Network Defense competitions are games where the goal is service uptime. The way teams are scored is through this principle, where periodically your services will be pinged or checked for responsiveness, and if the response is good then you are awarded points. They normally last 5+ hours and involve a decently large team of around 8 people. A network defense competition consists of a few parties.

• Blue Team: The team the competitor usually plays as. In charge of defending a network and responsible for service uptime.
• Red Team: The team the competitor is playing against, they are the group who are trying to infiltrate your network and take down services.
• White Team: The team responsible for event organization. A neutral team who can help aid the Blue Team with consulting, device resets, and providing injects.
• Black Team: The team responsible for infrastructure setup and ensuring the network is usable by the other teams.
• Orange Team: The team responsible for scoring. They will often go into your network and check services for availability and award points. In addition to service uptime, there are a number of side objectives a blue team is responsible for, such as competing injects or doing secondary tasks provided by the orange team.
• Injects: Tasks provided by the White Team which could involve providing documentation of the installation of a new service, proof of device hardening, or really anything.
• Orange Team Task: The orange team can inform you of some task which needs to be completed before the Orange Team comes to check. For example, you may be tasked with taking personal information off a site, and if the Orange Team checks and it's still there then points are deducted.

Depending on the scenario any amount of people can be on a particular team. Most often the competitors of the game are either Blue team or Red team members.
